Welcome to Shedding the Stigma!

Shedding the Stigma is a grassroots movement dedicated to shedding the stigma surrounding military mental health issues including PTSD, depression, and anxiety, while encouraging those who suffer to seek help. While Veterans make up only 10% of the U.S. population, they sadly account for 20% of all suicides. Yet many people continue to tip toe around the seriousness of post-war trauma and say words like “PTSD” with a whisper. If we ever hope to see the number of suicides decrease, we need to shed the stigma and make both speaking about mental illness and seeking help not only acceptable but a sign of strength. Additionally, we need to educate our non-military peers in the importance of compassion, understanding, and empathy.

We are taking the first step, publicly telling our stories in hopes that others will do the same. If we begin talking, and others begin talking, our movement will gain momentum. Slowly, we will create an atmosphere where every Veteran feels comfortable telling their stories and asking for help when they need it most. We want those still suffering to know that they are not alone, that there is nothing wrong with seeking help, and that is completely possible to feel joyful and whole again.

Together we will beat this enemy that is robbing our nation of its honored Vets. Join us in telling your story. Help us encourage more people to speak out and seek help. We know this takes a lot of strength and courage, but if you’re ready to tell your story or share some encouraging words, please contact us as: sheddingthestigma@gmail.com
